30 Ways to Use Florida Water

Spiritual waters, or eaux in French perfumery, are solutions of fragrant essential oils combined with distilled water and some degree of perfumer’s alcohol or grain alcohol, with or without the addition of other fragrant substances ( i.e. Eau de Cologne). Often they are charged with odorous principles of flowers (i.e. Eau de Rose). They originated in the South of France or Italy, and were transported to New Orleans with the earliest perfumers.

Spiritual waters can be blended with ingredients such as water from specific sources, essential oils, tinctures, herbs, and so on. They are used as offerings to the spirits, added to floor washes and spiritual baths, and used in home protection rituals and spiritual cleansings. They can be used on the altar as an offering, in floor washes for blessings, or on the person to receive the special benefits they possess. Spiritual waters are readily available in pharmacies and botanic and magic shops in most areas - and of course, at Medicines and Curios -  and are quite inexpensive. They can also be made from scratch with the right formulas. They are not very difficult to make, though they do require some investment in the essential oils and access to the right herbs for sufficient fragrance.

By far, the most popular of spiritual waters in the various magickal traditions is Florida Water. Florida Water is the American answer to Eau de Cologne, or Cologne Water. It was originally valued as a unisex cologne, preferable to other, stronger smelling perfumes. It was used in copious amounts in barbershops as aftershave and cologne. It shares the same citrus base as Cologne Water, but has the addition of sweet orange (rather than the lemon and neroli of the original Cologne Water), and adds spicy notes, including lavender and clove. According to the current trademark holders, Lanman & Kemp Barclay, Florida Water was introduced by the New York City perfumer (and founder of the original company) Robert Murray in 1808. The company states that their product, now sold under the Murray & Lanman brand, still uses the original 1808 formula, and that the current label is also a slightly modified version of the 1808 original.

In the 1880s and 1890s, Murray & Lanman Florida Water was advertised as “The Richest of all Perfumes” and “The Most Popular Perfume in the World." Although now obscure to most of the general American population, Florida Water remained popular among South American and Caribbean cultures. It was incorporated into magical and ritual traditions, including hoodoo.

In Hoodoo, Florida Water is used in spiritual cleansings and home protection. It can be worn on the body, used as an ingredient in magical works or by itself as a cologne, put in the bath water and misted in the environment to purify it. In fact, there are so many ways Florida Water can be used it is no wonder it remains a favorite spiritual water among practitioners. Here are 30 ways Florida Water can be used to make your life more enjoyable.

Reel in the New and Clear out the Old with Magickal Floor Washes

Happy New Year to everyone from Medicines and Curios!

One of the best ways to make room for the best things the new year has to offer is to do a thorough home cleansing at the beginning of the year. This includes using a magickal floor wash. Medicines and Curios carries a wide selection of such floor washes at affordable prices so anyone can do this and reap the benefits.

How you use a floor wash depends on what you want to accomplish. There are two rules of thumb: 1) to get rid of something, wash out the door or back to front and 2) to draw something in, wash in the door or front to back.

To perform a floor wash to get rid of negativity, remove obstacles and open roads, start at the back of your home at the top floor from the back of each room out, taking care to get all corners of the room. Some people will start at the top of the walls and wash down, but that’s not really necessary (nor practical for most folks) unless you are doing a most thorough wash. Proceed to the next room until you have cleansed all rooms in this fashion. Then wash down the stairs and begin again from the back of your home. When you get to the front door, wash the doorstep and your front porch if you have one. Pour the leftover water to the east.

In addition to using a floor wash to cleanse your home, it is important to clear your home of clutter. At the very least clear your doorway of clutter inside and out. There has to be some way for energy to flow and somewhere for it to flow.

After a cleansing you can light a white candle in the main room of your home. You can place four glasses of water in the four corners of the room and leave then there for three days. Some people will use eggs in the same fashion. These things will absorb any residual negative energy.

Best Times of Day and Month for Cleansings

The traditional time for taking a spiritual bath is at or right before dawn. Some folks pay attention to the moon phases for enhancing the power of their cleansings. For example, when the desired result is to remove a condition or obstacles and open roads, then performing the cleansing during a waning moon is ideal. If the goal is to draw something to you, then a waxing moon is ideal. A full moon is ideal for harnessing all of the power of the moon towards a desired goal. However, a cleansing can be done any time the need arises, so don’t wait until morning comes if there is an urgent need.

Disposal of Leftover Water
The disposal of leftover bath water varies. Probably the most common method of disposal is tossing the remains towards the east at sunrise. However, there are other, more specific ways of disposing water that has been used in a cleansing.

Disposal towards a cardinal direction: To the East for drawing and growing; to the West for repelling and reversing: To the North for left-handed works; To the South for blessings, especially from the Ancestors.

Disposal in running water: To run off or remove a condition

Tossed towards spellcaster: To return a conjure to a conjurer

Transferred to a stranger: To get rid of a condition without regard for who ends up with it, or to intentionally target a person. The condition is transferred via the principle of contagious magic. Leftover floor washes or bath water are poured onto the sidewalk or somewhere someone else will walk over it; thus, “catching” the condition and carrying it away from you and your home.

Dispersed in the air: To diffuse a situation.

Just a little inspiration.

She is 92 years old, petite, well poised, and proud. She is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably coifed, and her makeup perfectly applied, in spite of the fact she is legally blind. Today she has moved to a nursing home. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making this move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, where I am employed, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet curtains that had been hung on her window. "I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year old having just been presented with a new puppy. "Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen the room....just wait," I said. Then she spoke these words that I will never forget: "That does not have anything to do with it," she gently replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like the room or not, does not depend on how the furniture is arranged. It is how I arrange my mind. I have already decided to love it. It is a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice. I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or I can get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do work. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I will focus on the new day and all of the happy memories I have stored away....just for this time in my life.

How to Consecrate Amulets and Talismans

A talisman or amulet is a piece of jewelry, a trinket, charm, picture or collage that is used to protect one or attract that which one desires such as love, money or whatever it may be. According to some traditions, amulets are charged when the moon is waning, while talismans are charged when the moon is waxing.

To consecrate or ritually charge an amulet or talisman, light some incense as an offering to the Divine entity of your understanding. Place the object on your altar.

Sprinkle the object with salt and say:

"I consecrate you with the element of Earth."

Pass the object through the incense and say:

"I consecrate you with the element of Air."

Pass the object through candle flame and say:

"I consecrate you with the element of Fire."

Sprinkle the object with water and say:

"I consecrate you with the element of Water."

Place the object on the altar and hold your hand over it. Visualize a beam of light coming from the Divine through your hands into the object. Say:

"I hereby declare this object charged with the powers of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. That it shall be used only for good, according to my will and divine law. May it serve me well in this world, between worlds, in all the worlds. Let it be so!"

Your talisman or amulet can now be used.

If you haven't seen all of the very cool talismans available at Medicines and Curios yet, take a minute to check them out.

Australia's Successful Antarctic Blue Whale Voyage

As a proud father I am posting this link. My son Dr. Brian Miller (yes the same one who at 13 years old -1993- built our first web store) has had tremendous success with his expedition to find Blue Whales. See for yourself. Video — Australian Antarctic Division

Lead marine mammal acoustician, Dr Brian Miller, said Antarctic blues have a very deep and resonating song which can be picked up hundreds of kilometres across the Southern Ocean.
“The acousticians made 626 hours recordings in the sample area, with 26,545 calls of Antarctic blue whale analysed in real time. The researchers were then able to triangulate the position of the whales from their vocalisations and direct the ship to the target area,” Dr Miller said.
“A team in a small boat was then deployed to gather skin biopsies and photo identifications from the whales,” he said. Read more...

FIRE UP YOUR LOVE MOJO ON VALENTINES DAY OR ANY DAY!

AN ANCIENT MAGICAL AND HOLY CUSTOM, Old-tyme Spiritualists used aromatic sachet powders, herbs, resins, and oils to dress petitions, fix spells and candles, and drop in foot track magick. Priests before the birth of Christ anointed themselves with perfumed oils and aromatic powders and believed these oils and powders brought success, love, ignited passion and kept away evil spirits, among other things.

In the past as well as present, sachet powders were often contained in little bags along with sweet smelling herbs and perfumes. In ancient China, scented sachet bags were worn on the body as ornaments and used to absorb sweat, repel insects and ward off evils. During the Qing Dynasty, scented sachets were considered love tokens. Queen Isabella of Spain used fragrant sachets combining a variety of flowers, spices, and seeds.

In Hoodoo and various folk magic traditions originating in Africa and Europe, sachet powders consist of powdered herbs roots and mineral compounds. The ingredients are chosen for the characteristics they possess that are consistent with a desired purpose. For example, if you want to draw someone near, you would use a powder made from herbs and minerals that have attraction properties such as roses and magnetic sand. If you want to drive away evil or a negative emotion like depression, you could use Run Devil Run. If you wanted to use a sachet powder for more nefarious purposes you could use Hot Foot Powder which may include sulfur, cayenne pepper and dried, pulverized red ants.

If you would like to try your hand at making your own love drawing sachet like the Queeen of Spain, try this recipe.

Queen Isabella's Love Sachet

In a bowl, combine the following ingredients:
  • Dried rose petals
  • Dried carnation petals
  • Powdered orris root
  • Powdered calamus (Sweet flag) root
  • Powdered coriander seeds
  • Powdered cinnamon
  • Vanilla bean
  • Essential oil of your choice
Blend the powders together first. If you are hand grinding the seeds and spices yourself, use a good mortar and pestle to grind them. It may take a little muscle and a bit of time to get the ingredients to a fine powder. Then add your flower petals and toss everything around like making a salad. Put in an organza bag and place in your drawers to keep your clothing smelling sweet and fresh. Keep some in a glass jar to keep it fresh until you are ready to use.

If that seems like too much trouble or you simply want to buy a sweet smelling, aromatic sachet powder, there is no time like the present. You can take advantage of our BUY ONE GET ONE FREE sale when you purchase our featured product, Temptress Love Powder. Atlanta proposes controversial crackdown on prostitution

The city of Atlanta is proposing a controversial crackdown on prostitution.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s noon and the immediate area around Miller’s Rexall Pharmacy in downtown Atlanta is to the owner’s liking: clean; quiet; calm.
But Richard Miller, who has owned the Broad Street business for 48 years, says when night falls the clean and calm disappears. Each morning, when he comes to work, Miller is greeted by evidence of a thriving sex and drug trade — from condom wrappers to empty crack vials.
“Makes it disgusting to walk past every morning,” he said.
The city of Atlanta, hearing the frustration of residents and business owners such as Miller, is proposing a controversial crackdown on prostitution. The proposal – which will be debated next Monday before the city council’s public safety committee — comes at a time when Atlanta is once again trying to make areas of the city wracked by drug and prostitution tolerable for residents and business and inviting for tourists and commuters.
Council members have introduced a law that would make it illegal for convicted prostitutes — and those who have been convicted of buying their services — to be in areas of the city where the sex trade is the heaviest during their probations. For second offenses, a conviction could mean a ban from the city.
The proposal, supported by Atlanta Police Chief George Turner and Mayor Kasim Reed, would put Atlanta alongside cities such as Seattle and Washington, D.C. that have adopted loitering laws aimed at curbing drug activity, gang violence and prostitution.
But such laws are ripe for legal challenge because they put police in the constitutionally shaky position of arresting someone for standing on the street or walking on the wrong sidewalk on the suspicion they might commit a crime. And advocates for victims of human trafficking are taking a dim view of the proposal, seeing it as needlessly punishing the vulnerable.
“Banishment? Really? It is 2013. Are they going to stone them as they are taking them out of town?” said Stephanie Davis, executive director for Georgia Women for a Change. “This doesn’t solve the problem and it is not good public policy.”
Reed considers the proposal a necessary response to a public nuisance where there are few easy answers, and points out the ordinance targets those who both buy and sell sex.
“I am open to input … but let’s be clear — it focuses on individuals, not just women or men, who have been prosecuted and convicted,” Reed said. “So if you have not been convicted of prostituting then you won’t be subject to this.”
A legal thicket
Atlanta is aware of the potential legal fight it could be courting. Turner, city attorneys and others are discussing ways to improve the law, including making sure it can survive a court challenge.
According to the current draft of the legislation, any person – a buyer or seller – convicted of prostitution-related charges would be banned from “areas of known prostitution.” The city would determine the areas of known prostitution annually based on the previous year’s crime statistics.
Some legal scholars argue against such laws giving police the power to make arrests because someone is suspected of being involved in a crime just because they are in an area where crime is prevalent. They say it could violate the 4th Amendment which protects against unreasonable search and seizure without probable cause.
For that reason, state and federal courts throughout the country have struck down similar laws that would create prostitution, drug or gang-free zones. The legal precedent most cited in these cases is the Supreme Court’s rebuke of a 1999 gang-loitering statute in Chicago. Similar cases include a 2006 prostitution loitering ordinance struck down in Nevada and a 2000 case where a Clarke County judge in Athens struck down a loitering ordinance aimed at drug activity, calling it constitutionally vague.
Reed said Atlanta’s proposal — similar to a law in Seattle — is more nuanced. And like the Seattle law he thinks it will survive legal scrutiny. Simply standing in a prostitution zone won’t likely lead to the initial arrest. But if a convicted prostitute or buyer is flagging down cars or striking up conversations with passersby, then they could be subject to arrest and banishment.
” We’re not trying to put people in jail,” Reed said. “We simply ask that they not come back to where they were caught or convicted.”
The Georgia chapter of The American Civil Liberties Union, which has fought similar laws in other states, favors decriminalizing prostitution. If the proposed law passes, it will consider challenging it.
“I don’t see how this helps,” said Chad Brock, staff attorney for ACLU Georgia. “The ACLU’s position is that the city should focus on trafficking and the exploitation of children.”
Living around the sex trade
Miller, the pharmacy owner, thinks the police are doing a good job trying to beat back open-air prostitution. But he thinks they need more weapons.
“They are arrested and three days later, that same person is back here doing the same thing,” he said.
Those prostitutes, some victims of child sex trafficking, need help not jail, Davis argues.
“We are talking about transgender youth. Poor kids, who are having survival sex and have nowhere else to be,” Davis said.
Reed said Atlanta had made major strides in dealing with prostitution and child sex trafficking. The city has set up a sex trafficking crimes unit, converted fire stations to safe places for abused children and partnered with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, he said.
“This issue needs to be dealt with and I care deeply about it,” Reed said.

Back from Tasmania!

Hello to all,

I am back from my trip to Tasmania. The Australian lifestyle is something to admire.  There is a calm, relaxed, have fun sense-ability they have that gives off a mellowness I enjoyed.  The flight from Atlanta to Hobart is about 30 hours long (with layovers).  It takes a toll on your body (bottom) but it is a great opportunity to catch up on reading.

I was glad to take along several books to re-read.  My mind is so full of (it) stuff that it really needs a defrag, but that's a different story.  In re-reading a book I enjoy skimming over the parts I remember and then concentrating on parts I forgot or missed.  I can go through many books that way on a flight.

I reread the above book for several reasons.  One is that it has such good information that is authentic. The information is vast and covers so many of the day to day needs of the reader.  Many of the people that read this book ask me questions about it as they pick up their supplies. I like to be somewhat knowledgeable about what I sell so I try to read as many books over and over again  as I can. I also like the author and carry all her books in my store and online.

I have had a wonderful experience with Denise over the last several years and our synergy has branched out to help many people seeking this type of information.

I urge you to read and reread whatever books you have.  You never know when that tidbit of information will be needed and if it is fresh in your mind, well KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

Best Regards,
Doc Miller

Pagan Calendar for today:

Consualia
Tue, August 21, 12am – Wed, August 22, 12am
Annually on August 21
PPD Pagan Calendar
atlantappd@gmail.com
The Consuales Ludi or Consualia is a festival which honors Consus, the god of counsel, and the one who protects the harvest which is in storage at the time of the festival, which took place about the middle of Sextilis (see 21 August). According to Livy the festival honors Neptune. The harvest grains were stored in underground vaults, and the temple of Consus was also underground. This shrine was covered with earth all year and was only uncovered for this one day. Mars, as a protector of the harvest, was also honored on this day, as were the lares, the household gods that individual families held sacred. During the celebration horses, mules, and asses were exempted from all labour, and were led through the streets adorned with garlands and flowers. Chariot races were held this day in the Circus Maximus, which included an odd race in which chariots were pulled by mules. On this day the rape of the Sabine women took place under Romulus. Seeing a need to increase the population of Rome, Romulus authorized each Roman to forcibly take women from the visiting Sabines as their wives, but only as appropriate to their social status. A war to avenge this insult was avoided when the kidnapped Sabine women intervened and voluntarily accepted their Roman husbands, who had been careful to treat them honorably. Some say, however, that Romulus only regulated and re-instituted them after they had been before established by Evander. There were also sacrifices to Consus on 7 July and 15 December. Consus' feasts were followed by those of the related goddess Ops: the Opiconsivia on 25 August and the Opalia on 19 December. pagancalendar.co.uk

MAGICKAL CHARMS

An Amulet is an object which has intrinsic power to give protection to its wearer, whereas a Talisman is specifically made to achieve a particular purpose. Amulets give protection by absorbing negative energies, while Talismans work by generating a positive force to achieve their objective. Both work like self charging solar batteries and are constructed in a way which links them with the appropriate planetary force concerned for the intention. Amulets and Talismans have been worn by people of almost every culture right up to the present. Even today millions of people throughout the world who claim to have no time for all this Magickal nonsense happily wear their crucifix or St. Christopher or Star of David - all of which are types of Amulets worn for Magickal protection. This category consists of three product lines: Key of Solomon Talismans, Medieval Fortune Charms, and Star Charms.

Our Key of Solomon Talismans are faithfully reproduced from the Key of Solomon, the famous book of Magickal Law reputed to have been written by King Solomon himself 3,000 years ago. Medieval Fortune Charms originate from Poland and were worn by medieval Knights as Amulets around the neck, on belts, or used on pieces of parchment. They are made of brass and copper and supplied with a leather hanging thong. The Star Charms line is an eclectic collection of authentic Talismans and Amulets from a wide number of cultures and sources. All pieces are made of brass and copper.

Dedicated to my wife for mother’s day 2012

I just finished assisting a customer that has shopped here for years.  During our conversation she said, "I have a confession to make to you."  We'll I thought, maybe she took something without paying, previously.  Maybe, we put something in her bag that she did not want or did not belong to her.  There are several more maybes but I won't bore you with what goes through a retail owner's mind.
She says to me, " I could never tell you this before.  But now that I'm grown and more spiritual, I can tell you now." She told me that she has been shopping here with first her grandmother and then her mother, since she was 3 years old. (She looked to me to be in her 30's).  She said,” When I was a little girl I can remember the time I came into the store and saw you.” “I thought you were the most gorgeous person I’d ever seen.”
I started blushing and smiling.  Beverly (our reader) who was standing by me laughed in her special way and as she walked away she said I needed to stop doing what I was doing cause all the women are coming onto you the last few weeks.
Well, this woman of the Watts family goes on to tell me that she would get in trouble every time she came into the store.  She would stare and stare and stare at me the whole time her family shopped. Her mother and grandmother would scold her and said, “it’s not polite to stare.”  She laughed and said, I still think you are really good looking!” (Blush, blush).
I said, “ What you just said really makes me mad!  The same thing happened at my tenth year, high school reunion.  All these girls told me that they had a crush on me.”  I said, “Why didn’t all these people tell me way back then???”
I don’t know about my looks but I’m flattered.  About what Beverly said, “you better stop doing what you are doing cause all the women are coming on to you the last few weeks.”  What I do know is that I enjoy listening to people, I always have.  I try to listen and understand where they are coming from and what’s going on with them at this period of time.
This last year has been very good for me.  The store, website, mail order, and shows have been very rewarding.  I’m in a really good spot and as happy as ever.  My family is healthy, and happy and growing.
I am thankful for all this!  Most of this I have been able to enjoy because of my wife Debbie.  We have been together since high school.  We will be celebrating our thirty-seventh wedding anniversary this year.  She is a great mother to our children and a wonderfully happy, new grandmother.  I thank her for sticking by me all these years and helping me to understand how wonderful life can be!
To all of you that I have encountered on this journey, thank you for the sharing of your experience, with mine.

Richard

Casting Spells

Spell Casting can be as varied and diverse as the person that practices magic.  However, there are a few things that every magic practitioner can do to obtain the optimal results from their work…
Tips For Casting Spells
New_picture
There are many things which will contribute to a success or failure of a spell. Any of the following, or a combination of the following can help you in your spell casting.

  1. The Moon phase
The proper Moon phase is one of the keys to success in Spell casting. Just as a farmer may plant his seeds or how fish spawn on the full moon during the full moon, a full moon can help you with your spells, but some spells work better on other phases of the moon. Selecting the right moon phase is sometimes easier then others.
There are 4 phases of the moon, and each phase lasts for 7 days. For example many people think the ‘Full Moon’ phases is only one night, but they are wrong, the ‘Full Moon’ is actually the 3 days, the day of, and the 3 days after the date where the moon is the fullest. The following are the phases:
    • New Moon – During this phase spells which get rid of things will have the best success rates.
    • Waxing Moon – During this phase spells which gain things (money, hair, etc) will be at their peak.
    • Full Moon – All magic is much more powerful on the night of the full moon, during this phase spells which deal with power and magical energies will be at their strongest.
    • Waning Moon – During this phase spells which deal with the doing away of destruction of things will work best.
  2. The proper materials and supplies
You must use the correct ingredients. For example do not use a green candle in a love spell, use a red one. Keep the green candle for money spells. All the ingredients for all the spells may be purchased from our online store, or you may try to find the items in your local shops or elsewhere online.
Magical ingredients also have a greater effect when they have already had a charmed spell placed on them.
  3. The mental condition of the Practitioner
When casting a spell you must be focused on the spell, the target, and the emotions of the spell. When casting a love spell you must have love in your heart, not hatred. Likewise when casting a hex you must have hatred for the person you are casting the spell on. If you are in a happy mood an exil spell will not work. You must also believe completely in the spell and the power of magic.
  4. The experience of the Practitioner
The more experience you have with magic, the greater the effect of the spell you will cast. If all you do is cast a spell once a month you will not be able to cast powerful spells. You must cast many spells and become familiar with the feel of magic before you are able to control it fully.
Too often people get frustrated after only casting one or two spells and give up on magic. Usually it will take a few times for a spell to work successfully for new spell casters. This will quickly vanish though, once you have cast a single spell correctly, casting other spells becomes easier.
  5. The Magical Energy built up by the Practitioner
There are many spells and rituals which will build up your magical energy and power. It is best to practice magic by casting this type of spell. This way you get more experience, but at the same time you are building your magical powers. The more magical energy you have built up, the more powerful your spells will be, this is very important when casting spells against others who also have built up their magical powers.
  6. Your belief in the magic you are working
You must believe in the spell you are casting. If you do not believe the spell can not possibly work. Magic is not a game or a toy to play with. You must commit yourself to magic and the powers of it when casting spells.
  7. The will of the Universe
No matter how good your ingredients are, how much power you have, you can not change the will of the universe.
  8. The right Spell
Obviously. If a spell doesn’t work for you it may be the wrong spell, or it may be the right spell but any of the above other things like the moon phase, your mood, the ingredients or something off may be off. Keep a notebook of all the spells you have cast, when and where and where you got the ingredients. This way you will know which spells work best for you
